President Rivlin meets with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem

President Reuven (Ruby) Rivlin met last week at his residence with Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III.

The President welcomed him and spoke of his great appreciation for the contribution of the Christian community to Jerusalem, and to all Israeli society. “All who understand the history of this land know the significance, and the holiness of Jerusalem. While we have different beliefs, we live together side by side in the Holy Land.”

The Patriarch thanked the President and said, “You know our commitment to the beloved holy city. The Patriarchate continues to respect its relations with the State of Israel, despite some challenges over the years.”

The Patriarch briefed the President about the current issues of concern for the Patriarchate and the Christians in the Holy Land represented in the recent joint statement of the Heads of Churches in the Holy Land; including the utmost need for the continued respect of the Status Quo agreement.

The two went on to discuss a range of issues of concern to both communities, and spoke about ways to build bridges and understanding between the two faith communities.
