IDF strikes Hamas targets in Gaza, first time since Cast Lead war

December 24, 2010
According to the IDF Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, targets about Hamas’ housing operatives were struck by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for the first time since Operation Cast Lead war.
During a security briefing to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee last Tuesday, December 21, 2010, Ashkenazi said that “the situation in the south [Gaza Strip] is fragile and explosive. Most of the terrorist activity is directed toward IDF activity along the security fence. The past year has seen 112 attacks executed against IDF forces and 60 terrorists were killed.”
Discussing the situation in Lebanon, Lt. Gen. Ashkenazi also added that “tension prevails in preparation for the publication of indictments against those accused of the murder of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Al-Hariri.”
The Chief of Staff also announced a decrease in the number of people entering Israel illegally from the Egyptian border as of December. “Over the past year, 13,350 people entered Israel illegally. The fence will be a difficult hurdle to cross but won’t stop infiltration altogether. We are building three sections. We just added Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, ‘Humvees’ and night vision systems.” However, he stressed that, “the solution for illegal infiltrators lies in legislative changes that would allow Israel to send people back to their home countries.”
