PM Netanyahu Meets with the Leaders of Red Army Veterans Organizations on Victory Day over Nazi Germany

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Wednesday May 9, 2012, met with the leaders of Red Army veterans, on the occasion of Victory Day over Nazi Germany, and received from them a Red Army victory ribbon, one of the Red Army’s highest decorations for bravery.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “You symbolize Jewish heroism. I am moved every year when I meet with you. Without the victory over Nazi Germany, there would have been no State of Israel! I wish you health and long life.”

At a special meeting at the Knesset to mark the victory over Nazi Germany, Prime Minister Netanyahu said:

“We meet on this occasion, as we do every year. You asked me to wear this ribbon as a symbol of appreciation and solidarity. I do so and bow my head before the medals that glorify your uniforms. Every medal and every citation is a story of courageous – frequently bloody – battles and your great sacrifice, you and your comrades in arms, including the many who fell.

All in all, 1.5 million Jews fought against the Nazis in World War II, 500,000 in the ranks of the Red Army, and you saved humanity. All who fought against them did so but you made an additional contribution – in practice, you saved the Jewish People, and you ensured the Jewish future. We will not forget this. We know this and we want to give this special expression and, as far as I am concerned, do an historic justice in this regard.

Today, and every day, I would like you to know that I am proud of you. All MKs are proud of you. The Jewish People is proud of you and thanks you. You have our heartfelt gratitude. Continue to be healthy and continue to be proud of the great thing that you did. Thank you.”

Moody’s cuts Israeli banks outlook from stable to negative

Moody’s Corporation (NYSE: MCO) is the parent company of Moody’s Investors Service, which provides credit ratings and research covering debt instruments and securities, and Moody’s Analytics, which offers leading-edge software, advisory services and research for credit and economic analysis and financial risk management.

At the Moody’s report was stated that the weakness in the Israeli corporate-bond market poses credit risks for the quality of assets the banks hold. Because they are loaded with bonds issued by the biggest conglomerates, this will become a problem “as their profits suffer and securities tank.” Moody’s warns Israel’s GDP growth could slow in the next 12-18 months as exports to its main market Europe sink.

The Bank of Israel response to Moody’s report explains that most of the factors noted in the notification by Moody’s—and which led, according to the ratings agency, to reducing its credit rating outlook for Israel’s banking sector—are known, and have even been noted by the Bank of Israel on various occasions in the past as risk factors and challenges facing Israel’s banking system. In effect, Moody’s referred in its notification both to factors in the economic and geopolitical environment in which the banking system operates, and to features of the banking system itself, particularly capital ratios of the banks and credit concentration. Stress tests conducted recently by the Banking Supervision Department together with the IMF took into account the factors noted above.

The Bank of Israel emphasizes that based on results of the stress tests and on the determined supervision of the banking system by the Bank of Israel, we believe that Israel’s banking system is robust, and that it can withstand shocks as it has in the past. Among the factors contributing to the resilience of the system are the low debt ratios of households and the business sector in Israel, a relatively low leverage level for Israel’s banking system, and minimal exposure to sovereign debts of European countries in crisis.

Israeli artist Avner Moriah is to present his Illuminated Book of Genesis to Pope Benedict XVI during a special audience at the Vatican on May 16. Accompanying Moriah will be Israeli Ambassador to the Vatican, Mordechay Lewy; and Angelica Berrie, President of the Russell Berrie Foundation.

Moriah’s Illuminated Book of Genesis took two years to create, and will be included in the Vatican Library’s distinguished holdings. The book, which is part of Moriah’s project to illuminate the entire Bible, is replete with vibrant biblical images. One of its many unique features is that it visually compares various biblical stories as a visual midrash. The exquisite Hebrew text was executed by calligrapher Izzy Pludwinski.

“It is a tremendous honor to present my work to the Pope, and for my Illuminated Book of Genesis to be included in the Vatican’s collection of historical religious works of art that have inspired mankind throughout the ages,” said Moriah, 58, a native of Jerusalem.

Moriah’s numerous works are part of many prestigious libraries, museums, and private collections, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard University and Yale University, which already have acquired his Illuminated Book of Genesis.

Hebrew University archaeologist finds the first evidence of a cult in Judah at the time of King David, with implications for Solomon’s Temple

Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, the Yigal Yadin Professor of Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem announced last Tuesday May 8, 2012, the discovery of objects that for the first time shed light on how a cult was organized in Judah at the time of King David. During recent archaeological excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, a fortified city in Judah adjacent to the Valley of Elah, Garfinkel and colleagues uncovered rich assemblages of pottery, stone and metal tools, and many art and cult objects. These include three large rooms that served as cultic shrines, which in their architecture and finds correspond to the biblical description of a cult at the time of King David.

This discovery is extraordinary as it is the first time that shrines from the time of early biblical kings were uncovered. Because these shrines pre-date the construction of Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem by 30 to 40 years, they provide the first physical evidence of a cult in the time of King David, with significant implications for the fields of archaeology, history, biblical and religion studies.

The absence of cultic images of humans or animals in the three shrines provides evidence that the inhabitants of the place practiced a different cult than that of the Canaanites or the Philistines, observing a ban on graven images.

Israel Cannot Tolerate a Nuclear-Armed Iran

1) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threat “death to America” and “death to Israel” must be taken seriously.

2) A nuclear-armed Iran would control the oil resources of Saudi Arabia, hence all the oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran could then devastate the world economy.

3) The range of Iran’s Shahib ballistic missiles can reach all of Europe.

4) Iran could easily blackmail Europe and accelerate its Islamization.

5) This alone would collapse the American economy—far more seriously and permanently than the current multi-trillion dollar meltdown.

6) A nuclear-armed Iran would shatter NATO in the midst of a resurgence of Russian imperialism.

Israel especially cannot allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons—period.

In an era of weapons of mass destruction, no nation—certainly not minute Israel—can afford to absorb a first strike. That would be enough to destroy Israel. Hence, preemption is a vital necessity. All talk about “containment” or “counter-value” and “counterforce” strategies—the futile language of the Cold War between two super powers—the US. And the U.S.S.R.—are merely academic exercises which can only obscure the existential threat confronting Israel and postpone decisive action.

There are also domestic reasons why Israel cannot tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. A nuclear-armed Iran would

- put an end to aliya
- many Jew—the most skilled and employable—will leave for other countries
- foreign investment would decline
- the economy would tailspin
- unemployment would skyrocket
- more funds will be spent on defense
- social services would plummet
- the Jewish birthrate would fall
- Arabs would gain control of the Knesset (thanks to the democratic principle of “one adult, one vote”

Israel has no choice: it either stops Iran’s development of nuclear weapons or it ceases to exist.

“Two-Gun” Cohen; Chinese Spy Master and a second Moses!

By Joe King

Morris “Two-Gun” Cohen was the one and only Jewish Chinese General and, for a time, was head of the Chinese Secret Service! One of his colleagues was Dr. Moses Schwarzberg, a Russian Jew who helped save China, for a time, from the Communists.

The official languages (in order of importance) in the Chinese Secret Service, during the time of the Two Moses, were Chinese, Yiddish and English.

Born in Poland to a large (eight children) observant Jewish family, Abraham Morris Cohen was a handful almost from the time he could walk. His father beat him when he was three years old for wandering away from his East London home. A sturdy lad, he responded to Christian boys’ bantering by – at age eight – knocking out a 12-year-old. A boxing promoter signed him to fight professionally. He called himself ”Fat Moisha” or “Cockney Cohen,” but would never enter the ring on a Friday – the Jewish Sabbath. He feared his father’s wrath.

He was often hungry; his family was poor – so he earned pocket change by picking pockets. Ultimately, he was recruited by a man known as “Harry the Gonof” (the Yiddish word for “thief” – a Fagen-like creature right out of a Charles Dickens novel.) Arrested, he was sent, at age 12, to a variety of reform schools. His angry parents borrowed the money and sent him, aged 16, to a friend farming in Wappala, then in the Assiniboia territory – later part of Saskatchewan.

Cohen’s life changed drastically one evening in Saskatoon. He delighted, on Sunday evenings, to dig into a large Chinese dinner and then gamble in the back of the café. But, when he turned up one night at one of his favorite haunts, he found the aged Chinese restaurant owner, Mah Sam, being held up by a hoodlum. Cohen wasn’t going to have his plans for the evening interrupted – so he sidled up to the thug, whacked him in the head – disarmed him – and then threw him bodily out of the restaurant.

To the Chinese, he became a hero at a time when anti-Asiatic feeling in Canada was even greater than its anti-Semitism. Cohen became the only white man admitted to the ranks of the secret Chinese Tong.

Ultimately, Morris Cohen journeyed to China – now being led into modernity by Dr. Sun Yat Sen, and he became commander of the President’s 250-man bodyguard.

Morris Cohen, at the right in the white suit, with Chinese President Sun Yat-Sen and future President Chiang Kai-Shek

Several attempts were made to assassinate the President. On one occasion, Cohen fought off three assailants attacking Sun on a train. He was nicked in his left hand. The wound made him think. “Supposing it had been my right arm. As soon as we got back to Canton, I got me a second gun, another Smith and Wesson revolver.”

Journalists dubbed him “Two-Gun” Cohen.

Two-Gun was of great service to the Chinese. A veteran of World War I, he taught his new friends boxing and the use of weapons. He became a military adviser, and an arms dealer. In 1922, he was named Director of the Chinese secret service.

Morris Cohen had a very limited knowledge of Chinese, but in his new post, he was able to use Yiddish quite a bit. One of his confreres was interpreter Moses Schwarzberg, and the two would chat in Yiddish!

The Schwarzberg story is stunning in itself.

At the beginning of the 1920s, Moses Schwartzberg was fleeing the newly-born Soviet Union. He had been a member of a revolutionary group at the University of Moscow, whose members, were marked for death after they tried to kill Soviet
Union founder Lenin in 1918 (a plot devised by yet another Jew, Shlomo ben Hirsch Rozenblum – known to the British Secret Service as Sidney Reilly – and whose career was fictionalized as James Bond. But that’s another story.)

Schwartzberg’s flight took him to Siberia, then a lawless region. As he crossed over the border into China, then locked into a Civil War between a democratic party headed by Sun Yat-Sen and a swath of powerful war lords, he stumbled across the near-frozen body of an elderly Chinese man. The man still had a faint pulse, and Schwartzberg dragged him to a nearby Russian Cossack village, and brought him back to consciousness. To the Jewish doctor’s surprise, the Chinese man spoke Russian and after a time, feeling that he was dying, he turned over to Schwartzberg a message from the Soviet Union’s leaders to Dr. Sun (plus gold coins to bribe his way).

The doctor made his way to Shanghai but found his way to the President barred by a highly-protective bodyguard. Schwartzberg gathered that the “huge man with a shaved head and two pistols in his belt” was in charge but when he tried pleading his case, in Chinese and Russian, the chief bodyguard responded, in English, “Who the hell are you and what the hell do you want?”

When he learned who he was, Cohen switched to Yiddish. A collaboration of the two Moses was born. When Schartzberg made his presentation to Doctor Sun, it became apparent that the Chinese President couldn’t read Russian. The
multilingual Jewish doctor was immediately offered a job as an interpreter. Two-Gun put it this way: “Listen, kid, how would you like to stay on as Dr. Sun’s confidential secretary. He likes you.” And so Chinese spies worked in Chinese, Yiddish and English!

(Dr. Schwartzberg completed his medical degree in Berlin, practiced medicine in Hong Kong and Peking, but fled with his wife and daughter to Chungking when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941. After the war, he organized the
Shanghai Regiment with 1,200 Jewish volunteers to fight for newborn Israel.)

Two-Gun becomes a General

Two-Gun was named to command the Chinese 19th field army. Time Magazine, in 1931, reported that Cohen “was gazetted by the Canton government a Brigadier General.” He led Nationalist troops in fighting against both the Japanese and communist Chinese.

When the Japanese entered World War II, in 1941, Cohen was captured in Hong Kong. The Japanese now had a great enemy – but they didn’t know it. By identifying himself as a Canadian businessman, he fooled the Japanese.

Ultimately, Morris Cohen was among a small number of prisoners released in exchange for important Japanese officials held in the US. He returned to Canada. “When we pulled into Montreal,” he said. “ I picked up my parcels and stepped
down on the platform – a free man.”

On Friday, Dec. 3rd, 1943, the Montreal Gazette reported “A few dozen men and women met early yesterday at Bonaventure station for the sole purpose of meeting the fairytale Chinese general, a Jew by birth a Canadian Citizen, Gen. Morrice Cohen a former aide-de-camp to the famous rebuilder of China, Dr. Sun Yat sen.”

Cohen married a Montreal woman but the affair didn’t last. He planned to return to England – but he had one great service to offer to the Jewish people.

In 1945, the United Nations was being formed in San Francisco. And a resolution proposing the partitioning of Palestine into two states – one Jewish and the other Arabic – was to be submitted to the new organization. The international Jewish community was on hand to do what it could to see that the Resolution was passed.

Two-Gun flew to San Francisco and convinced the head of the Chinese delegation to abstain from voting when he learned they planned to oppose partition. That abstention ultimately helped ensure passage of the measure partitioning Palestine – and allowing the creation of Israel.

He died in Manchester and was buried there with a trilingual headstone – in English, traditional Hebrew and in Chinese (a tribute from the people he served so well.) The tribute identified him as “Mah Sam” – as close as the Chinese could get to Morris Cohen. It means “clenched fist.”

Danny, a five-year-old male lion, was, last Thursday, May 3rd, 2012, flown to his new home at the Belgian zoological park. He will be joined by two female lions from the Netherlands. Staff from the Belgian park studied the care and keeping of lions with their Safari counterparts.

After the Prime Minister’s remarks, Kyustendil (Bulgaria) Mayor Petar Paunov gave him a framed 1943 letter written by Bulgarian Parliament Deputy Speaker Dimitar Peshev, who saved approximately 50,000 Jews from murder and extermination. Mayor Paunov noted that Peshev’s home has recently become a museum dedicated to the memory of Yitzhak Rabin.

Leaders from business and industry, especially those representing the security and high tech sectors, also will participate in the conference, alongside policy experts and analysts from the academic community. They will be meeting with Israel Prize Laureate Major Gen. (Res.) Prof. Isaac Ben-Israel, Head of Yuval Ne’eman Workshop for Science, Technology and Security at Tel Aviv University and Prof. Aaron J. Ciechanover – 2004 Nobel PRIZE winner Chemistry.

By Prof. Paul Eidelberg
President, Israel-American Research Institute

Approval Voting

Most political scientists deplore Israel’s parliamentary electoral system of Proportional Representation (PR). This system is the result of making the entire country a single electoral district. PR produces not only an absurd multiplicity of parties, but also a cabinet consisting of rival parties, and this makes Israel’s government inept, unstable, and corrupt.

Not that plurality voting in single member electoral districts is the alternative preferred by most political scientists. Consider this statement of Professor to Steven J. Brams:

Several alternative systems for electing single winner [in a district election] have been shown to be far superior to plurality voting (PV)—the most common voting system used in the United States as well as in many other places in terms of a number of criteria. PV, which allows citizens to vote for only one candidate, suffers from a dismaying flaw. In any race with more than two candidates, PV may elect the candidate least acceptable to the majority of voters. This frequently happens in a three-way contest, when the majority splits its votes between centrist candidates, enabling a candidate on the left or right to defeat both centrists. PV also forces minor-party candidates into the role of spoilers, as was demonstrated in the 2000 election with the candidacy of Ralph Nader. Nader received only 2.7 percent of the popular vote, but this percentage was decisive in an extremely close contest between two major party candidates.

Of the alternatives to PV, Brams recommends the system called “approval voting” (AV). He notes that AV has been proposed independently by several political analysts: “AV is a voting procedure in which voters can vote for, or approve of, as many candidates as they wish in multicandidate elections—that is, elections with more than two candidates. Each approved candidate receives one vote, and the candidate with the most votes wins.

In contrast, Israel’s age-old system of Proportional Representation effectively disempowers the citizens of this country by compelling them to vote for fixed party slates. Brams enumerates the advantages of the Approval Vote system:

1)It gives voters more flexible options.
2)It helps elect the strongest candidate.
3)It reduces negative campaigning (since AV induces candidates to try to mirror the views of the majority of voters, and not just to cater to minorities whose voting could not give them a slight edge in a crowed plurality contest).
4)It increases voter turnout.
5)It gives minority candidates their proper due.

Without unqualifiedly endorsing AV, it is surely preferable to Israel’s decrepit system of Proportional Representation which compels citizens to vote for fixed party lists, some of whose members are not even known to the voters.

Discovered Hebrew Seal Bearing the Name ‘Matanyahu’ from First Temple Period

Israel is famous for its discoveries and excavations. In Archaeological Work the Israel Antiquities Authority is Conducting in the 2,000 Year Old Drainage Channel between the City of David and the Jerusalem Archaeological Garden:

Remains were Discovered of the Closest Building to the First Temple Exposed so Far in Archaeological Excavations, and on its Floor – a Hebrew Seal Bearing the Name ‘Matanyahu’.

In the excavations, underwritten by the Ir David Foundation, a personal Hebrew seal from the end of the First Temple period was discovered on the floor of the ancient building. The seal is made of a semi-precious stone and is engraved with the name of its owner: “Lematanyahu Ben Ho…” (“למתניהו בן הו…” meaning: “Belonging to Matanyahu Ben Ho…”). The rest of the inscription is erased.

According to Eli Shukron, excavation director on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, “the name Matanyahu, like the name Netanyahu, means giving to God. These names are mentioned several times in the Bible. They are typical of the names in the Kingdom of Judah in latter part of the First Temple period – from the end of the eighth century BCE until the destruction of the Temple in 586 BCE. To find a seal from the First Temple period at the foot of the Temple Mount walls is rare and very exciting. This is a tangible greeting of sorts from a man named Matanyahu who lived here more than 2,700 years ago. We also found pottery sherds characteristic of the period on the floor in the ancient building beneath the base of the drainage channel, as well as stone collapse and evidence of a fire”.
