300 Immigrants Arrive in Israel to Serve in IDF as Lone Soldiers

Knesset members Michael Oren and Oded Forer, officials and members of the Israeli Scouts youth group and others welcomed about 300 new immigrants to Israel at a ceremony in Jerusalem last week. The newcomers arrived from more than a dozen countries and are expected to enlist in the IDF as lone soldiers in November.

The immigrants are members of the Scouts’ Tzabar program, an Israeli-run program for Diaspora youth to encourage IDF service and aliya. Together with the Scouts organization the program is run by the ministry of immigration and absorption, Nefesh B’Nefesh, the Jewish Agency, the Kibbutz Movement, the World Zionst Organization and Birthright.

Elad Sanderovich, the Executive Director of the Friends of Israel Scouts, told TPS that “by the end of 2017 no fewer than 450 top-quality young people will make aliya as part of the Scouts Tzabar program in order to make their contributions on behalf of the State of Israel and its citizens. They are making aliya despite the very significant obstacles that every immigrant must face.

“They deserve nothing but praise for making a brave decision to come to Israel and join the army. Our job is to envelope them with the warmest embrace possible,” Sanderovich said.
